DUURZAAMHEID,
CREATIVITEIT
& INSPIRATIE
The name Academy derives from the Akademeia, the olive orchard just outside of Athens were Plato taught around 400 BC. Coined by the maxim Know Thyself, the Academy was a place where the youth of Athens was assisted in the dis-covery of their unique gift and talents. Plato believed that a person’s talent always served the better good of society as a whole. He believed that when all men follow their calling, society will thrive.
Contrary to popular belief the Academy was not so much a school for philosophy with teachers and pupils, as a place for contemplation and self-development. Not just of the mind but also of the body and the spirit. In other words; head, hands and heart. Philosophy, sports, music, astronomy and politics were all part of the curriculum.
We too believe that we all have unique talents that are meant to serve the better good. But not just society as a whole but also the environment and the natural world. The current approach to sustainability is most often one of checklists and labels and technological solutions. It’s hardly ever intrinsically driven by a unique commitment to a better world and a common green future. What if you were to find your true calling and decided to commit to our environment? What would you discover in yourself? What obstacles will you need to overcome? And what sacrifices will you be willing to make to start building on a sustainable future?
I used to think that the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address all these problems. But I was wrong…The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy. And to deal with those we need a spiritual and cultural transformation
